Changing the Delivery Language
Selecting a different language will only affect the language for navigation buttons in delivery, such as the ‘Next’, ‘Back’, and ‘Finish’ buttons; any warning messages that appear during test delivery will also default to the new chosen language. Please note, selecting a new delivery language will not translate the content of any items in the test, they will remain in the language they were authored in.

Surpass users can change the delivery language for a particular test, either in the Test Creation settings, or at the point of scheduling the test.

To change the delivery language in Test Creation:

  • Go to the ‘Test Creation’ tab and then ‘Test Form’.
  • Select the Test Form you wish to edit and click ‘Edit Test Form’.
  • Go to the ‘Test Form Details’ heading, then ‘Test Delivery Options’.
  • Finally click the ‘Advanced Settings’ tab and scroll down to the bottom right-hand side and choose the ‘Test Interface Options’ section, here you will be able to change the language from the drop down menu ‘Default Navigation Language’.

The available languages will be listed here for you to select from. Select the delivery language for your test, this will then appear for every candidate sitting this test.

Note: If the ‘Allow Language Override’ box has not been ticked in Test Creation, then you will not be able to change the delivery language at the point of scheduling.

When scheduling your test the ‘Delivery and Administration’ section gives you the option to select your delivery language from a drop down menu, this will change the delivery language of your test for all candidates.

Candidates taking the test via web delivery can also change the delivery language of the test from the launch test page using a drop down menu, even if the delivery language for this test has been changed in Test Creation or Scheduling.

Note: If a candidate is taking a test in SecureClient they will not be able to amend the delivery language, their test delivery will be administered in the language set in either test creation, or scheduling, by examiners.

Right to left languages in delivery

Right to left keyboards are compatible with test delivery.

In Item Authoring, the advanced options in the formatting toolbar include functionality that changes the text direction. This can be applied wherever the formatting toolbar is available. If you author Short Answer and Essay item answer options using right to left alignment, candidates will have to answer in right to left text.

Item authors can also set the direction of candidates’ text input in HTML Essay items to right to left. This is useful if you want candidates to answer in Arabic or other right to left scripts. To change the answer input direction, go to ‘Additional Options’ and select ‘Right to left.’

The non-disclosure agreement and user details confirmation can also be configured in ‘Test Creation’ to display right to left languages.

For more information about Test Creation and delivery settings please read the article ‘Edit Test - Advanced Settings’ in the Surpass Help.
