Surpass Release 12.9 Information (May 2017)

This release of Surpass includes an array of exciting new features and enhancements, including the ability to make updates to items in bulk, share tests for quality review, and a new voice capture question type.

New Features

Below you will find details of new and updated features that have been introduced in release 12.9 of Surpass. The features are divided into sections based on the area of the system which they affect.  

Test Delivery: PDF Viewer
When navigating to an item in a test delivered in SecureClient that includes a PDF attached as a shared resource, the PDF will launch in a new PDF viewer, when selected, and remain on screen when navigating through items in the test that share the resource. Candidates will also be able to use functionality such as zoom and highlight in the PDF viewer. 

Test Delivery: Fit Height to Screen
The Test Driver will dynamically adjust to fit the full height of the screen it is being viewed on.

Test Delivery: Audio Settings
'Audio Settings', in delivery, will be moved from the bottom-right of the screen to the 'Settings' cog, which is also where colour preferences can be changed.  

Test Delivery: Candidate Surname followed by First Name 
In test delivery, the candidate's name will be displayed with the surname followed by first name; the surname will be in upper case.  


Item Authoring: Bulk Update Items
It is now possible to update an attribute on multiple items in a subject simultaneously, by using the new Bulk Update feature in Item Authoring.
You can use the Bulk Update function to add or remove the following:
  • Source Material
  • Media
  • Tags
  • Labels on answer options for Multiple Choice and Multiple Response items
  • Randomisation of answer options on Multiple Choice, Multiple Response and Either/Or items
  • Comments
You may also bulk update the workflow status of items.

Item Authoring: Voice Capture Question Type
A new audio recorder question type has been introduced, allowing spoken responses from candidates to be captured.  

Item Authoring: Upload Video as Assistive Media
Item Authors can attach a video file to the question stem block of all question types, and answer options of Multiple Choice, Multiple Response and Either/Or questions as assistive media. This will allow candidates to see a video equivalent of on-screen information, for example, through sign language translations.  

Item Authoring: Edit Item Lists
Item lists can be edited after they have been created so that multiple searches can contribute to an individual list.  


Test Creation: Share Tests for Quality Review
In the Test Wizard, you can now 'Share Tests' with other Surpass users. When sharing the test, you can select the users you would like to review the test. Once created, Surpass will send the relevant users a secure weblink to the test. If enabled when the web link was originally created, the reviewer will have access to a 'Quality Control' panel, where they can view marking information, reveal the correct answer, and download the mark scheme where applicable.  

Test Creation: Marker Annotations
A selection of new annotations are now available in the 'symbols' menu of Annotation Settings, which can be enabled for use by Markers.

Test Creation: Test Form Reference Character Limit
The character limit for a Test Form reference has been increased from 25 characters to 100.


Test Administration: Paper Mark
A new 'Paper Mark' interface within Test Administration allows marks to be recorded for tests that have been taken on paper.  


Setup and Site Admin: Support HTML only in Item Authoring
A new subject setting will mean that subjects delivering tests only in HTML will only have HTML supported items visible in Item Authoring.  

Setup and Site Admin: Test Administration Sub-Permissions
When creating a Custom Role, sub-permissions are now available within Test Administration to allow more granular level roles to be created.

Setup and Site Admin: New Subject Status  
A new 'Active (Closed for registration)' subject status means that no new candidates can be associated with subjects at this status. It will still be possible to create content and schedule tests for subjects at this status.

A note on HTML delivery
Developments are underway to move Surpass from Flash to HTML. Release 12.9 of Surpass sees more features supported in HTML. To stay up to date with HTML developments, click here for a full list of supported features.  

Resolved Issues

ID: DE25046
Issue: When running a HTML test in Chrome, if the 'agree to terms' text spans two lines, then the 'I accept' and 'I don't accept' buttons are disabled.
Resolution: The 'I accept' and 'I don't accept' buttons are now available.

ID: DE23496
Issue: Annotations do not stay with the text when the zoom is changed on the web browser.
Resolution: Annotations now move with the text.

ID: DE24750
Issue: Score reports are printing with information missing.
Resolution: The score report will now print with all information and candidate data.

ID: DE24962
Issue: When finishing an exam with timed sections, a message appears advising that not all questions have been attempted, even though the candidate is unable to return to the section with unattempted questions.
Resolution: The message is no longer displayed.

ID: DE25242
Issue: Scheduling via the API fails when you have duplicate test form references.
The test schedules because subject reference and test reference have also been included.

ID: DE25381
Issue: Timed sections are not taken into account when scheduling via the API.
Resolution: The timed sections will now match what has been set up in Test Creation.
