How to Add Pre-Test Rules

About: You can add pre-test rules to your test form, which allow authors to define a number of items that can be used for pre-testing purposes during a test. The items that are presented to a candidate behave as Non Scored items and rules, meaning they appear to a candidate as a normal question but do not count towards their overall mark. This allows you to generate data for question items to assess their performance before they are shown to candidates as scored items. This article will explain how to add pre-test rules to a test form.

Step 1: Set up your folders in 'Item Authoring'

Create new folders in your subject in 'Item Authoring' and give them an easily recognisable name, so that you will know which folders to select in 'Test Creation'.
Add the items you want to appear as pre-test items to their clearly labelled folders.
In Delivery, the pre-test items from one of these folders will be selected to appear to the candidate.

Note: Items in sub-folders will not be included in pre-test rules in standard sections.

If you want to add a pre-test rule to a Section Selector, you must create sub-folders of pre-test items in each of your root folders. You must create a sub-folder for each section within the Section Selector. In delivery, each sub-folder will appear in one of the sections in the Section Selector and they will be chosen in the order they are created. For example, the first section within the Section Selector will contain the pre-test items from the first sub-folder in the list.

Step 2: Add Folders to your Test Form

Select the Test Form icon from the top of the Test Form tree and then select 'Edit'.
Select 'Browse' to open the folder structure of your subject. here you can select your folders containing pre-test items. Press Ctrl or Shift to select multiple folders at once.
Select 'OK' to add the folders to the test form.
In delivery, pre-test items will be chosen from one of these root folders.

Step 3: Add Pre-Test Rule

Standard Section
Highlight the section and select the upwards arrow next to the 'Add' button. The select 'Add Pre-Test Rule'.

Name your rule and specify the minimum and maximum number of pre-test items you want to appear at this point.
Select 'OK' to add the rule to your test form.
You can add multiple pre-test rules to your test form, but you must ensure the specified number of pre-test items in your test form does not exceed the total number of pre-test items available.

Section Selector
You can also highlight a Section Selector section and 'Add Pre-Test Rule'.
At this point, you can rename the rule, but you cannot specify the number of pre-test items you want to appear. Instead, items in the sub-folders in your folder of pre-test items will appear in each section of the Section Selector.
You must create a sub-folder to correspond to each section within the Section Selector. In delivery, each sub-folder will appear in one of the sections in the Section Selector and they will be chosen in the order they are created. For example, the first section within the Section Selector will contain the pre-test items from the first sub-folder in the list.
