Best Practice When Using Item Sets

What is an item set?

An item set is a collection of items that you always want to appear together in a test, for example if they are linked together by a case study or theme. If you add an item from a set to a test in both the Test Wizard and Test Creation, all the other items in the set will also be added to the test.

Items in an item set will always appear together when delivered to a candidate, even when the section the item set appears in is randomised. This ensures that items that are linked to each other will be delivered consecutively.

You can edit an item set in 'Item Authoring' by selecting the set from the tree structure. Here, you can add tags at the item set level so you can search for the item set when using 'Item Search' or creating a test in 'Test Creation'.

There is also a new 'Allow randomisation of item set' setting in 'Item Authoring', which allows the author to determine whether the items should be delivered in a fixed order or can be randomised within the set when placed in a randomised section.

Read on for further information about how item sets will behave in a test.

Item sets and non-randomised sections

If you include an item set in a non-randomised section of a test, the items will appear consecutively in the order that they appear in 'Item Authoring'.

You can move the item set around the test form and delete the item set, but you cannot delete or move individual items within the set.

Item sets and randomised sections

If you include an item set in a randomised section of a test, the items will always appear consecutively. However, the order in which the items appear is dependent on whether you have the 'Allow randomisation of item set' setting ticked in 'Item Authoring'.

If you do not have the 'Allow randomisation of item set' setting checked, the order of the items within the item set will remain the same as it is in 'Item Authoring'. However, the position of the item set within the section will be randomised in delivery.

If you do have the 'Allow randomisation of item set' setting checked, the order of the items within the item set will be randomised in delivery. The item set will always be delivered together, but the items within the set will be randomised when the item set is within a randomised section. If the item set contains an information page, this will always be delivered at the beginning of the item set.

If you want the item set to appear at a particular point within a randomised section, you can use the 'Pin' button to fix the item set in place.
