There are two modes to the ‘File Attach’ question type: ‘Managed’ and ‘Manual’. The mode you choose when creating your question determines the behaviour of the question in delivery. This article will explain the differences between the ‘Managed’ and ‘Manual’ modes of ‘File Attach’.
In the 'Managed' mode of 'File Attach', you can add up to five files for the candidate to download. These can either be blank files or files from your device, which can be pre-populated.
The blank files supported are:
You can customise the text on the download and upload buttons for each file that the candidate will see in HTML delivery.
For .docx and .xlsx files, you can apply the 'Secure File Attach' setting. You can only apply the 'Secure File Attach' setting to one file for each file type meaning you can only add up to two 'Secure File Attach' files.
In delivery, this setting restricts the functionality available to the candidate within Word and Excel, so that they only have access to the 'Save' button and limited tabs. For a full list of restricted functions, please see this
Important: We recommend that you deliver 'Managed' File Attach questions in locked down SecureClient. When the candidate edits a file from a 'Managed' File Attach question and selects 'Save', the file is automatically uploaded to the test.
In the 'Manual' mode of 'File Attach', you can add up to ten files for the candidate to download. These can either be blank files or files from your device, which can be pre-populated.
The blank files supported in the 'Manual' mode of File Attach are the same as for 'Managed' (see above).
You can customise the text that appears at the top of the list of files to upload and above the upload button. You can also customise the text on the download buttons for each file. There will only be one upload button in delivery, for which you can also customise the text. This could be used to provide the candidate with instructions on how to interact with the question.
You can also configure upload restrictions for the candidate, including the minimum and maximum number of files that the candidate can upload, the accepted file types, and the maximum file size for each file uploaded (up to 999MB).
Important: We recommend that you deliver 'Manual' File Attach questions in web delivery or unlocked SecureClient, as the candidate will need to navigate to the files on their device to choose a file to upload.
