Different Delivery Methods

The purpose of this article is to provide you with information about all the delivery options available through Surpass and may help you to determine which of these is most effective, according to your specific requirements. Alongside the benefits and drawbacks of each delivery method, you will be able to see the delivery method from a candidate’s perspective, helping you to take this into account when making your decision. See The Candidate Experience article for what the candidate will see when delivering a test using SecureClient/web delivery, and the SurpassDelivery Application: The Candidate Experience for what the candidate will see when delivering a test using the SurpassDelivery application.

SecureClient

Using SecureClient allows you to deliver high stakes, summative assessments to centres with slow or intermittent internet connections, safeguarding against any loss of data and minimising candidate disruption. SecureClient locks down the candidates' PC so that no other programs, such as Internet Explorer, Windows Explorer or MS Office, can be accessed for the duration of the test.

In addition, with SecureClient, tests can be taken online or offline. This means that, if taken offline, tests can be downloaded in advance and taken without an internet connection present without compromising the candidates' experience. These results would then need to be uploaded with an internet connection present.

SecureClient is an ideal delivery choice for:
  • High stakes, summative assessments
  • Assessments requiring invigilation
  • Centres with slow or intermittent internet connection
Other key features of SecureClient include:
  • Securely stored items
  • Instant results
  • 'Unlocked’ mode also available (this means the candidates can navigate away from the delivery screen).
  • Ability to download tests in advance
  • Recovery of responses in case of candidate PC failure
  • Candidate responses autosaved
  • Candidate specific assessment timer
  • Invigilation functions, (Pause, Lock etc)
  • Handles computer failure during test delivery
  • Unaffected by internet failure or local server/network failure before a test is delivered/during test delivery providing it has been downloaded in advance

Web Delivery

Using the Surpass Web Delivery allows you to deliver assessments through a standard web
browser, without the need for any installation. This type of delivery is ideal for the quick and easy deployment of invigilated assessments.

Web Delivery is an ideal delivery choice for:
  • Controlled Tests
  • Formative Tests
  • Practice Tests
Other key features of Surpass Web Delivery include:
  • Deliver tests through hyperlink distribution
  • Easy keycode access to assessments
  • Securely stored items
  • Recovery of responses in case of candidate computer failure
  • Assessment is run within a standard web browser.
  • Candidate responses autosaved
  • Instant results
  • Items stored securely
  • Candidate specific assessment timer
  • Invigilation functions (Pause, Lock etc)
  • Handles computer failure during test delivery
However, whilst candidate responses will be auto-saved when delivered through a standard browser, this delivery method will be affected by any instances of internet failure, both before and during delivery. As such, it is not recommended for high-stakes assessment, or for centres with a potentially unreliable internet connection.

Tablet Delivery

BTL's tablet application is an accessible and portable way of managing your assessment process. The Surpass system has been integrated into an application that can be used on a variety of tablet devices with iOS or Android operating systems, allowing for greater freedom and flexibility of use. This application supports high-stakes tests, leaving you safe in the knowledge that our tablet application ensures quality and security when delivering summative assessments.

The SurpassDelivery tablet application allows you to deliver tests with or without an internet connection present and enables candidates to take tests in any part of the world.

Features of the tablet app include:
  • Pinch and zoom capability
  • Vertical scrolling for longer questions
  • Static Flash content
  • JPEG image files
  • Colour preference options
  • Integrates seamlessly with the Surpass system
  • Deliver tests created in the Surpass platform through tablet devices with iOS and Android operating systems
  • Unaffected by internet failure or local server/network failure before a test is delivered/during test delivery providing it has been downloaded in advance
